China Beijing Mutianyu Great Wall
Introduction

The Mutianyu Great Wall is located in the Huairou District of Beijing. It connects to the Juyongguan Great Wall in the west and Gubeikou in the east. Since ancient times, it has been a key military pass guarding Beijing and is known as the “dangerous pass on the mighty ridge”.The Mutianyu Great Wall has a unique architectural style and is densely packed with watchtowers. The Zhengguantai, where three watchtowers stand side by side, is a rare sight along the Great Wall.

22 enemy towers are densely packed

The Mutianyu Great Wall was built mostly on the steep cliffs on the outside, taking advantage of the natural terrain and using the dangers of the landscape to its advantage. The Great Wall is seven to eight meters high and four to five meters wide at the top. It is made of granite and is majestic and sturdy.Mutianyu Great Wall has a high concentration of watchtowers. Of the 2,250 meters of the Great Wall currently open to the public, there are 22 watchtowers.Among them, there are four watchtowers within a distance of less than 500 meters from one (Dajiao Tower) to four (Zhengguantai). This dense distribution pattern of watchtowers is not found on other sections of the Great Wall.

Great Wall climbing route reference

From the north ticket gate, you can walk to the Great Wall and ascend from platforms 10 and 8; from the south ticket gate, you can walk to the Great Wall and ascend from platforms 8 and 6.The two trails are similar in length, about 1,500 meters. If you don’t want to expend too much energy on the trail, you can take the cable car next to the north ticket office. The upper station of the cable car is located near Tower 14.

The section of the Mutianyu Great Wall currently open to the public is about 2,250 meters long. The southeast end is the first large corner tower at Mutianyu. Going northwest, you can reach Tower 4 (Zhengguan Tower) and see the rare structure of three enemy towers standing together.Continuing forward, the wall is relatively flat and easy to walk on, and you can walk all the way to the 22nd platform at the northwest end.
