Beijing Zoo is located on Xizhimenwai Street in Xicheng District, Beijing. It is one of China’s larger urban zoos with a relatively complete collection of animals, and has a history of over 100 years since Guangxu 32nd year. The zoo is divided into three areas: east, south and north.
Here you can find the giant pandas, golden monkeys,Amur tigers, white-lipped deer, elk, pygmy horses, red-crowned cranes, and representative animals from all over the world such as chimpanzees from Africa, kangaroos from Australia, jaguars, manatees from Mexico, and bison from Europe. There is also an amphibian and reptile house, which is split over two floors and exhibits reptiles100species, including one of the world’s largest crocodilesбкthe saltwater crocodile.
At present, the Beijing Zoo peony garden covers an area of 1,500 square meters. It is located to the east of the current waterfowl island and to the west of the Bingfeng Hall. The peony garden is dominated by the Peony Pavilion and the surrounding corridor. The peonies that bloom from late April to early May every year are a beautiful contrast to the surrounding corridor. In midsummer, the pink lotuses in the water by the pavilion and the dark green lotus leaves reflect each other, creating a unique scenic spot in the garden. The peony garden now has nearly 400 peonies planted. After preliminary identification, it has collected 54 varieties of peonies from 10 color families at home and abroad, mainly the two major varieties of Central Plains peonies and Jiangnan peonies.
The zoo also has a science museum, which offers weekend animal classes for preschoolers.Children can get up close to the animals under the guidance of teachers, listen to the stories that happen to them, and learn about the wonders of animals through various activities with their friends, such as games and crafts.
