Most people who visit the Juyongguan Pass focus on climbing the Great Wall and going to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view. You need to walk in the scenic area, and it takes about three hours to climb to the beacon tower at the highest point. You need to be physically fit, and you should be mentally prepared before you go.

Look up at the “world’s number one mighty pass

To get to the scenic area, you first have to come to the Juyongguansquare. Here is a stone gate called Yuntai, a Tibetan Buddhist architectural treasure made of white stone. The interior passageway of the Yuntai is carved with beautiful and unique statues of Bodhisattvas on both walls.Walk along the stone gate to reach the entrance of the Pass, where you can see the plaque “The Number One Pass Under Heaven” high above you, and take a photo with it.

After buying tickets at the entrance to the Pass, enter the scenic area. There are many cultural attractions in the scenic area, including the Guan Yu Temple, Diecui Academy, Zhaozhong Ancestral Hall, Fengyu Granary, etc., which enshrine famous people from ancient times and record the history of the Juyong Pass. There is also a small lake next to it, which you can visit one by one.At the same time, being at the foot of the north and south city gates of the scenic area, you can admire the tall and majestic city gates. The Great Wall connected to the city gates is in the shape of a Chinese character “╚╦” on the hillside, which is very special. The inns and restaurants in the scenic area are also located here.

Climbing the Great Wall

After visiting the city walls, you can start your journey to climb the Great Wall. It usually takes two to three hours to climb to the top beacon tower, which is a physical challenge. However, once you reach the top, you can see one of the famous “Eight Views of Beijing,” “Juyong Diecui,” in the distance. The rolling green mountains and the open view are heart-soothing.
There will be public toilets and a small shop selling snacks and drinks along the way, but the prices are higher than outside. If you have enough physical strength, you can bring your own snacks and drinks. It is recommended to bring high-calorie foods such as chocolate and raisins to replenish your energy. The Great Wall in this section is relatively steep, with 40 cm high steps and 20-30 cm high gentle steps. Moreover, due to long-term wear and tear, some parts are uneven, so you must be extra careful. After climbing the Great Wall, you can choose to return the same way, or you can descend from the Great Wall in the other direction and return to the scenic square.
