Tiananmen is located atthe intersection of the central axis of the capital Beijing and Chang’an Avenue. It was built in the 15th year of the Yongle reign (1417) of the Ming Dynasty and was originally called Chengtianmen. After being rebuilt in the 8th year of the Shunzhi reign (1651) of the Qing Dynasty, it was called Tiananmen to this day. It was the main gate of the imperial city during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly proclaimed to the world from the Tiananmen Gate: “The Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China is established today!”Tiananmen has since become a symbol of New China. The national emblem of the People’s Republic of China is hung in the center above the double eaves of Tiananmen Gate, and a portrait of Chairman Mao is hung above the central doorway on the city platform. On either side are large banners with the slogans “Long live the People’s Republic of China” and “Long live the great unity of the world’s people”. In 1961Tiananmen Square became one of the first national key cultural relics protected by the State Council.
