Introduction
The world-famous Ming Tombsare located at the southern foot of Tianshou Mountain in Changping District, Beijing. Construction began in the fifth lunar month of the seventh year of the Yongle reign (1409) on the site of the Changling tomb, and ended in the Ming dynasty when the last emperor, Chongzhen, was buried in the Siling tomb. Over a period of more than 230 years, 13 splendid imperial tombs, 7 concubine tombs and 1 eunuch tomb were built here.In total, 13 emperors, 23 empresses, 2 crown princes, more than 30 concubines, and 2 eunuchs were buried here. It is the burial ground with the most complete preservation and the largest number of buried emperors in the world today. The Ming Tombs are magnificent in structure, complete in system, rich in history, and of high historical and cultural value.
Ming Dynasty Emperor Wanli’s tomb, the Dingling, has a layout that is square in the front and round at the back, which is a symbol of the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of “heaven being round and earth being square”.Construction of the Dingling Mausoleum began during the Emperor’s lifetime in the 12th year of the Wanli reign (1584), and it took six years to complete, at a cost of 8 million taels of silver. The emperor was only 28 years old when the mausoleum was completed, and it was not officially opened until 1620, leaving the tomb unused for a full 30 years.Dingling became one of the three mausoleums in the Ming Tombs.
