Chongqing Chaotianmen Square

Chongqing Chaotianmen Square is located in the northeast of Yuzhong District in Chongqing, at the tip of the Yuzhong Peninsula. It is located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, and from the square you can get a panoramic view of the two rivers and the surrounding area.

At the front end of Chaotianmen Square, the turquoise Jialing River and the brown Yangtze River meet. To the east is the magnificent Chongqing Grand Theater in Jiangbei District; to the west is the brightly lit Nanbin Road in Nanan District.The square is also a place of leisure for local residents, and on a fine day, many people fly kites here.

Chongqing’s Chaotianmen Gate was once one of the city’s larger gates, known as the “mighty pass of ancient Chongqing”. It was the place where local officials would greet the emperor’s edicts, but the gate was demolished in 1927.Today, the local government is preparing to turn it into one of the symbols of the “new Chongqing”, an area with an international and fashionable feel.

The pier near Chaotianmen Square is the departure point for night cruises on the Two Rivers.
