The circular skylight, inverted dome and dome theatre form an iconic “three-body” structure that together interpret the laws of celestial body movement. With the vision of “shaping a complete view of the universe,” the main exhibition area is divided into three parts: “Home,” “Universe,” and “Journey,”parts, which stimulate people’s curiosity and encourage them to feel the stars and understand the universe.
The completion and opening of the Shanghai Planetarium marks a new stage in the development of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum into a super-large comprehensive science and technology museum cluster integrating a science and technology museum, a natural history museum, and a planetarium. It will further highlight Shanghai’s soft power, promote the high-quality development of the museum industry in the new era, and better meet the peoplethe growing spiritual and cultural needs of the people.

Chinese astronomy, after thousands of years of diligent observation, has produced a vast amount of astronomical records. Unique Eastern thinking has created a unique astronomical system that closely links astronomical phenomena with the fate of the empire, as well as a complex calendar system that has been passed down in an orderly manner and continuously improved. With the influx of Western learning into the East, the scientific knowledge that was constantly being introduced eventually changed the form and function of traditional astronomy, and also made Shanghai the starting point of modern astronomy in China.
