Shanghai Old Street (Renmin Road)

Shanghai Old Street, formerly known as Fangbang Middle Road, showcases the historical and cultural evolution of old Shanghai from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the influx of Western cultureperiod.The commercial operations on the whole street are dominated by traditional characteristic industries, highlighting traditional folk culture and creating a Shanghai-style cultural atmosphere.

Shanghai Old Street is divided into two sections, east and west, by Guan Yi Street. The east section has been decorated and renovated, retaining the characteristics of residential buildings from the late Qing Dynasty. Lattice windows, row of door panels, Fan’s railings, and floor-mounted swing doors have been restored on both sides of the old street, complemented by the flying eaves, curled corners, lace drip water and horsehead walls on the roof.The facades of the houses in the western section are modeled on Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings, highlighting the folk customs of Shanghai’s old town.

Shanghai Old Street has century-old shops such as Tong Hanchun, Laotongsheng, Wuliangcai, Wanyouquan, Qiu Tianbao, Old Shanghai Teahouse, Deshun Restaurant, Chunfeng Dili Lou, Xishi Tofu House, Ding Niangzi Cloth Shop, Rongshun Restaurant, and Boyintang. It also has shops with traditional characteristics such as Danfeng Teahouse andand other shops with traditional characteristics.Together with the “Xingming Street” to the north, it presents a picture of the old Shanghai with its various trades and businesses and the hustle and bustle of the city.
