Introduction

Zhang Yuan was built in 1915 and completed in 1916. It was the private residence of Zhang Biao, who controlled the two provinces of Hubei and Hunan during the Qing Dynasty.It became famous because two influential figures in modern Chinese history lived there, one being the revolutionary leader Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the other being the last emperor Pu Yi.The two key figures of the Xinhai Revolution passed each other by just 54 days.Zhang Yuan witnessed the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic; the Japanese invasion of China and the resistance of the military and civilians; the liberation of Tianjin; and the vicissitudes of modern Chinese history.
