Xikai Church is located at the southern end of the bustling Binjiang Road commercial street. Built in 1917, it is the main church of the Catholic Diocese of Tianjin. The church building has a solemn and majestic style, and the sculptures inside the church are also intricate and exquisite. In addition, masses and Catholic festivals are open to the public, and you can participate to experience the strong religious atmosphere.
Outside visit
The exterior of the church is made of red and yellow flower tiles. The three towering towers arranged in a triangular shape are covered with green copper sheets. After years of erosion, the mottled green shines with a historical radiance in the sunlight. On top of the towerseach topped with a bronze cross.
Interior architecture
Entering the church, the first thing that catches the eye is the main interior colors of lake blue, white, and light yellow, which give a feeling of freshness. Only various patterns are carved at just the right places. 14 pillars line up from the doorway to the altar, with an extraordinary air.Around the church are a series of exquisite bronze statues of the faithful, while on the walls hang a series of oil paintings depicting the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. The church also contains colorful statues of the Virgin Mary, Jesus, angels, and so on.In addition, the stained glass windows are also very charming. On one side of the church you will find a small wooden room with a small cross on the ceiling. That is the “confessional booth” where the priest receives the confessions of the faithful.
